Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes series against Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

But, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" observation subsequent to England were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a break to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, Stokes said his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the side, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
